the beanstalk organic food is a not for profit community organisation that strives to sow the seeds of nourishment, fairness and connections into our community. It does this by sourcing ethically produced and ecologically sound items direct from farmers in the local region and local suppliers.

Food consumption has become increasingly removed from food production in our society. We aim to empower our urban community with the knowledge that their food is local and safe. the beanstalk organic food endeavours to re-establish the links between producer and consumer. By supporting our local farmers, the members and customers of the organisation get weekly fresh, seasonal and reasonably priced boxes of fruit and vegetables and access to other fresh and dry goods.

Each week there is a chance to feel part of the local food community. The local farmers that supply beanstalk love a chat as you arrive to collect a box of fresh produce that has travelled minimal distance to arrive in your hands.

the beanstalk organic food plans to foster this feeling of community with local farm tours, seasonal social events and cooking classes. As a not for profit community organisation we encourage our members to volunteer their time and skills to ensure that the work is divided and the beanstalk can thrive and grow.

Our objectives are:

  1. To develop direct links between the sustainable organic farming communities and the urban communities of the Hunter Valley

  2. To offer farmers fair prices and support them through difficult periods

  3. To build consumer awareness of sustainable agriculture and empower the community to consume ethically

  4. To minimise resource consumption and packaging

  5. To foster community skill sharing

  6. To create a viable and sustainable community organisation

We have a more specific list of objectives with the priorities that we decided in the Autumn general meeting. It can be viewed as a PDF file here.

Our origins:

The beanstalk was established two years ago by three friends who were concerned at the lack of access to healthy and safe food for the community. Most people they knew cited affordability as the reason they could not eat organically. There was also very little support given to farmers practicing environmentally sound agriculture in the Hunter region, with certification and transportation costs the main issues for small farm businesses.

The Hunter Valley is a rich and diverse organic agricultural centre, however little of the produce actually gets into Newcastle for a price that is accessible to all. The niche organic market that exists in the region is on the whole out of reach of low-income earners (students, pensioners, single-parent families etc).

A dialogue began with a farmer and the beanstalk organic food was established. From its humble beginnings on a veranda to its current location in Wickham, the organisation has flourished. Our members now have access to affordable, healthy and local produce and we support at least four local and sustainable farmers each week. This benefits the Hunter Valley farmers, our urban community and ultimately, our earth.
